SYNOPSIS

Queer My Friends portrays a very important chapter of Kang-won’s life: his coming out as gay and the changes he goes through from the eyes of his best friend Ah-hyun. This 30s coming-of-age buddy film draws how these two from such different backgrounds grow up together by questioning, exploring and, of course, fighting each other. While Kang-won struggles to embrace his sexuality, nationality and identity, Ah-hyun asks herself what it means to find oneself and accept others for who they really are.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Queer My Friends is a film that reflects on the meaning of human relations and community in a society that is becoming more and more individualistic through the stories of Kang-won and Ah-hyun. Kang-won and Ah-hyun continue their friendship by going back and forth between big cities such as Seoul, Korea and New York, USA. Born and raised in Korea, Kang-won lived as a Korean until adulthood. However, in search for his identity, he changes his nationality. His friend Ah-hyun's camera follows his life with the probing question, "What does it mean for an individual to find a community to belong to?” The question also extends to the universal theme of human life: the theme of “human relations” and “the process of getting to know oneself.”
