SYNOPSIS
Suki and Cheoli are sophomores in a Korean descendant high school in Gil Lim, China. These two, who are in love, are good students who study hard and help whoever in need. They pledge to remain truthful and positive as they look at the Dooman Rivernear them.Cheoli's mom Suyeoun, a long time manual laborer, is a healthy woman in good shape. She made a pledge by the Dooman River with Cheoli's father Seokryong when they were dating that they would remain truthful and positive not becoming short-sighted and narrow minded. However, she sneaked into South Korea on a boat one day just like all the other women in Gil Lim. She works at a Korean barbecue restaurant and sends money back home. Seokryong, a writer, is not able to write anything, and his loneliness grows bigger. One day, Cheoli bought a cellular phone and a motorcycle that he wanted for so long with the money from his mother Suyeoun who works without a permit in Korea. Since then, Cheoli abandoned his solemn pledge he made with Suki that he would be truthful and positive. He got involved with Miok, his classmate with detrimental attraction, and rode on his new motorcycle with her going to places like bars, Internet cafes and cartoon shops. He became a wayward student. While Cheoli was not around, Suki became close to Ryongho, the chief of their class. Cheoli beat up Ryongho after seeing her with him. But what he got from Suki was a harsh scolding. "You were a good man before. Look what you become. You are selfish and rotten. What makes you become like this?"Suki's harsh criticism made him think of how he was before. He went along the Dooman River to Mountain Baekdoo. As he saw the blue river, he reminded of the pledge that he would live genuine and truthful. He felt sorry for himself and decided to be true to himself. Suki took him back, and they felt closer than ever. Suyeoun, who once hoped to live truthful and positive, finally notified Seokryong that she would return soon to China from Korea. But she got involved in an accident. Not knowing what happened to Suyeoun, Seokryongand Cheoli waited for her. So did Suki whose role model is Suyeoun. However there is no sign of Suyeoun. In their garden, a lonely apricot tree is in bloom in the rain.
DIRECTING INTENTION
All the texts cannot avoid talking to the world. Neither can the film. Our children are confined. So are their dreams. Through my film, I wanted to say that life is not what is confined and intolerant. Let the Blue River Run! Iwould like to bring our kids with imagination of stages in a small room to the vast and wide ocean. I would like them to open their breath and to unfold theirimagination about freedom and youth even though it is a tragedy.
