SYNOPSIS

광주 대인시장에서 행상하는 하문순과 평화반점의 박복자는 5.18항쟁을 지켜보았다. 삶의 현장에서 보았던 5.18항쟁은 아픔과 자부심으로 남았다. 캄보디아의 소수 부족으로 살아가는 슬리와 네이떽은 고단한 노동을 감내하며 살고 있지만, 언제까지 이 삶을 지켜 낼 수 있을지 불안하기만 하다. 점령하에도 삶을 멈추지 않았던 팔레스타인의 여성들, 난민촌에서 노인이 된 노우라, 파트마는 자식들의 죽음을 지켜보았다. 언제까지 이 상황이 이어질까? 그들은 다시 고향으로 돌아갈 수 있을까? 누구도 희망을 말하지 못한다. 그리고 보스니아에서 살아가는 집시, 그들은 종교와 민족으로 구분하여 서로를 적으로 삼았을 때 어느 곳에도 속하지 못하고 공공의 적으로 취급되었다. 오랜 시간 인종차별의 대상이었던 집시 여성들의 불안한 삶을 라미자와 아멜라는 담담하게 이야기한다. 한편 감독의 두 아이는 어린아이에서 20대 청년이 되었다. 그들과 상구네는 어딘가 닮은 듯 흔들리며 가고 있다.

DIRECTING INTENTION

<민중의 세계사> 작업은 항상 난관을 넘어야 하는 과정이었다. 지역도 인물도 기간도 정하기 어렵고 언어도 통하지 않는 일이기에 늘 초보자가 겪는 일들을 겪어야 했다. 그렇게 다시 네 번째 작업을 시작했다. 내전의 아픔을 겪은 보스니아의 집시에 관한 작업이었다. 1차 촬영을 마친 후 2차 촬영을 준비하던 중 코로나19로 세상은 멈췄고, 봉쇄의 시간이 기약 없이 길어지면서 작업도 멈췄다. 멈추었을 때 작품마다 주인공의 곁을 지켜 왔던 여성들의 삶이 보였다. 그들은 가장 낮은 자리에서 흔들리면서도 강인하게 자신의 삶을 지켜 왔다. 각기 다른 환경과 문화에도 불구하고 그들은 서로 닮아 있었다. 국경, 민족, 종교, 언어가 장벽이 될 수 없는 것들, ‘그’ 공감을 함께 나누고, 또 다른 ‘그’를 관객들과 함께 찾고 싶었다.

SYNOPSIS

Ha Mun-soon, a peddler at Daein Market in Gwangju, and Park Bok-ja, a Chinese diner owner, watched the 5.18 Uprising. The 5.18 Uprising, which they saw in the field of life, was left with pain and pride. Sli and Neyap, living as a minority tribe in Cambodia, endure hard work, but they are worried about how long they will be able to survive this life. Palestinian women who did not stop their lives in the occupation: Noura and Fatma, who grew old in a refugee camp, watched their children die. How long will this situation last? Will they be able to return home again? No one can say hope. And the Gypsies living in Bosnia: when people divided by religion and ethnicity and made enemies of each other, they did not belong anywhere and were treated as public enemies. Ramiza and Amela calmly talk about the unstable lives of gypsy women who have been subjected to racism for a long time. Meanwhile, the director’s two children have grown from children to young adults in their twenties. The director’s family, Sanggune, and all those women they have met, are going while shaking as if they are somehow similar.

DIRECTING INTENTION

A People’s History of the World project has always been a process that had to overcome difficulties. It was difficult to determine the region, the person and the period, and the language was difficult to understand. So we had to go through the things that beginners always had to go through. Meanwhile, we started working on the fourth one again. It was a work about the Gypsies who suffered the pain of civil war in Bosnia. After finishing the first filming, while preparing for the second filming, the world stopped due to COVID-19, and the work stopped as the lockdown time became longer without any promise. When we stopped, we could see the lives of the women who stood by the main character in each work. They were swaying from the lowest position, but they were strong enough to defend their lives. Despite their different environments and cultures, they resembled each other. Borders, ethnicities, religions, and languages cannot be barriers. We wanted to share “that” sympathy with them and find another “that thing” with the audience.
