On a winter night, Juyeon receives a call from her father. In his drunken voice, he leaves strange remarks, “Don’t become like your aunt who committed suicide.” Stunned by the family secret, she starts chasing the traces of her aunt, who resembles her strikingly. Juyeon breaks the suffocating silence and recreates her aunt’s lost voice through animation.

When I mention having an aunt whose name and face I don't know, others often share similar stories about their aunts. Learning that my aunt wasn't the only being who couldn't be spoken of in the world gave me small comfort. At the same time, I always had a puzzling question. Why did the tragic protagonists in family secrets often have to be women? I wanted to say that these tragedies weren't their fault.
Since her death, even after 40 years, the discrimination experienced by those born female hasn't vanished within the patriarchal system. It's just become harder to explain. Discrimination has become trivialized and invisible under the label of 'private matters,' becoming too petty and shameful to even speak about. My Missing Aunt  is a project that aims to reveal these untold stories. By retelling the life and death of my aunt, who was forgotten and left only as tragic fate, I attempt to break the chain of tragedy.
