DIRECTING INTENTION

Documentary 'My father's house' shows how the identity of one family is formed when the desire to raise an affluent family and aspirations for the education of children come together during the rapid development of Korean society which regarded growth and development as a religion. Houses have long become means of increasing property and not places of residence in Korea with its economic policies that focus on vitalizing the real estate market. A person's competence and wealth is proven through how much profit is made when disposing of real estate. The prices of apartment complexes in Gangnam skyrocketed with redevelopment which started ten years ago and old apartment complexes are filled with hopes that redevelopment will soon be carried out in their area. The desire to acquire wealth in this way is connected to political orientations and was the reason behind the strong resistance to the real estate policies of the past administration. My father who had worked at a construction company for a long time also had such beliefs, and he worked out a strategy to buy a house in Gangnam. 'My father's house' started out from the questions I had about the political awareness of my father who supported the conservative party despite the fact that he was not part of the establishment even though he lived in Gangnam. I also retraced the history of labor of my parents and the lives of my family. My family is an average middle class family but was able to receive some of the benefits of the establishment by living in Gangnam. Other middle class families were broken up during the IMF economic crisis but we were able to delay such times because we lived in Gangnam. I wanted to take a critical look at my father's attitude on land and house prices. However I became confused when I realized that I was an accomplice to such a situation as I had grown up with all the benefits of private education. I realized that the process of recording my parents on video was also the process of confronting myself.
