SYNOPSIS

A Vietnamese woman, Thuy, is married to a Korean man and lives with her in-laws in rural Korea. One day, her gambling-addict husband is killed in a motorcycle accident. The woman gets suspicious because her husband, who had lost several fingers, was not even able to ride a bicycle. She wants to investigate her husband’s death, while the villagers find her annoying. In this rural village patrolled by the villagers themselves, the Vietnamese woman’s struggle to find the truth keeps hitting roadblocks. A police officer from Seoul wants to help her, but he is of no great use in face of the local police chief’s inaction and the villagers’ habit of completely ostracizing outsiders. Looking at the battle between the majority that wants to protect masked peace and the minority who stands against the established power, one may expect a tragic ending. But that tragedy is just another window through which we will look into Korean society. After all, Thuy’s sad story is not only her own problem.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Thuy becomes suspicious of her husband’s sudden death and tries to find the truth. Through this independent woman, we can look at today’s Korean society which has the social discrimination, power and violence disguised with the name of tradition and morals, and unbreakable exclusion. Also, Sangho’s betrayal and Thuy’s death are seen as another self of us, who are forced to choose extreme in this capitalist society. What kind of dream can you give Thuy, who strives to survive in this country? I made this film as a Requiem, contributed to many Thuys who lived and left this country. Also I hope this film be a hopeful song for many other Thuys who still live and will live here.
