Born as a son of gangster members in 1968, PARK Hyunsung is a natural-born fighter. Since his childhood, he was committed to be an Olympic champion. Yet he eventually became a gang member like his father, after failing to be selected to the national team in Seoul Olympics, 1988. However, he soon felt the guilt in his life. He was very depressed and even tried to burn himself to death. His body was 93 percent burned, which was the most severe kind that was beyond hope of recovery. Few years later, he was miraculously recovered after a long battle with. And he has set up a boxing gym for all. At the same year, Juyoung works as a researcher at Seoul National University, one of the top-notch universities in Korea. While she is working, she also passes the civil service examination which gives her the opportunity to become a high-ranking officer. However, this idealist always dreams that people in the world should be happy and should not be hurt from anybody. One day while doing internet searching, she finds an article about Phoenix Park and decides to learn boxing.

They are dreamers, even though they are living in Seoul that never sleeps. They are challengers living in the world filled with irrationalities and ironies. Phoenix Park, an ex-gangster boss and his two trainees are ready to go to the lonely road that no one else went. [The Ring of Life] introduces three boxers who went from being nobody to becoming one of the best boxers preparing a match in their own boxing ring through fierce fights.

복싱만큼 오랫동안 인간의 역사와 함께해 온 스포츠도 없을 것이다. 그래서 사각의 링은 늘 경쟁과 도전 그리고 드라마틱한 극복의 상징으로 우리에게 친숙한 공간이다. 이진혁 감독의 다큐멘터리 <링>은 자칫 상투적일 수도 있는 링의 안팎을 넘나들며 캐릭터 중심의 근원적인 드라마로 관객의 시선을 사로잡는다. 한때 촉망받는 복서였지만 올림픽 문턱에서 좌절한 뒤 조직폭력배 생활, 분신자살 시도 등 패배자의 길을 걸었던 박현성 관장, 복싱과는 거리가 멀어 보이는 서울대 연구원 출신의 여자 복서 박주영, 그리고 정규 엘리트 코스를 밟지 못하고 박 관장 주위에 모여든 변두리의 선수들은 1등만이 살아남는 냉혹한 링의 법칙에 맞서며 올림픽 대표의 꿈을 향해 도전해 나간다. 여기까지는 흔한 휴먼 스포츠 드라마에서 많이 봐 온 세팅과 별반 다르지 않아 보인다. 하지만 영화는 시작과 함께 상상하지도 못했던 혹독하고 처절한 훈련의 과정과 빠르게 전개되는 연습과 시합의 교차, 카리스마 넘치는 박 관장의 뼈 있는 독설과 도무지 왜 복싱을 하는지조차 생각하지 않고 그저 훈련과 시합을 반복하는 선수들의 모습을 통해 낯익은 휴먼드라마에 대한 기대감을 완전히 빗나가게 한다. 이 영화는 복싱이라는 도구를 통한 인간의 이야기가 아닌 이미 복싱과 내가 하나가 된 진짜 ‘미친’ 사람들의 이야기였던 것이다. 이제 경기에서 이기느냐 지느냐는 중요한 문제가 아니다. 영화는 사각의 링 위에서 벌어지는 도전이 얼마나 그들에게 특별하고 값진 것인지에 대한 관찰이기 때문이다. 다소 과도하다 싶을 정도로 다채로운 카메라 앵글과 극단적인 클로즈업은 정제된 편집의 과정을 통해 인물들에 대한 몰입과 스펙터클한 복싱 경기의 순간을 동시에 선사한다. 인터뷰와 현장음으로 구성된 절제된 사운드 전략은 링 안팎의 역동적인 소리들을 담기에 충분한 공간을 제공한다. <링>, 근원적이면서도 본질적인 스포츠 다큐멘터리의 새로운 대안을 제시하고 있다.
