An 18-year-old boy Sung-gong is always bullied by his peers. On that day he is dragged by the peers to the house of a highschool girl named Jang-mi. They, one by one, rape her without feeling guilty. Sung-gong tries to escape from this situation, but is forced to enter her room. 10 years later, Sung-gong and 3 other friends live in their society as if nothing happened. One day, led by something, Sung-gong starts to go to church and meets Jang-mi again there. After meeting her, Sung-gong lives only for the sake of being forgiven by her. They get closer and he thinks that everything is perfect. As time goes by, he thinks that he becomes forgiven and Jang-mi also escaped from her trauma. One day, an accident happens and Jang-mi writhes in the agony. Since being shocked, Sung-gong finds three other friends. Something irrevocable happens.

The theme of this film is to teach the viewers that anybody who sins gets punished, must take responsibility for all his actions.

<가시꽃>은 죄의식과 용서, 그리고 단죄의 드라마다. 과거의 상처에서 벗어나지 못하는 두 인물을 대비시키며, 용서받지 못한 자와 용서하지 못하는 자의 고통을 보여 준다. 두 사람의 상처는 대립적이다. 피해자의 상처와 가해자의 상처. 결코 지워질 수도 없고 양립할 수도 없는 두 개의 상흔. 성공은 장미에게 용서를 구하지 못했고, 장미는 끝내 성공이 가해자라는 사실을 알지 못한다. 영화는 씻을 수 없는 상처로 인한 비극을 보여 주는 데 집중하면서 한번 벌어진 일은 결코 주워 담을 수 없다는 사실을 각인시키고, 끔찍한 범죄는 다시 일어나지 말아야 한다고 다짐한다.하지만 상당히 논쟁적인 지점도 남긴다. 성공이 행한 행동이 장미에겐 어떤 의미가 있는 것일까? 장미가 성공을 용서할 수 있었을까? <가시꽃>은 단선적으로 보이면서 복합적이고, 복합적이면서 단선적이다. 씻을 수 없는 죄의식과 용서에 대한 갈구. 가해자이면서 피해자가 될 수밖에 없었던 한 남자의 운명의 고리. 그러나 여전히 남아 있는 상처들. 한 신인 감독의 집요한 문제의식과 그것에 근접하려는 노력을 <가시꽃>을 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 영화는 때론 롱테이크로 호흡을 유지하고, 때론 거칠고 짧게 장면을 잘라 내면서 완급을 조절한다. 불규칙적이면서 거친 스타일은 마치 성공의 성격을 보는 것처럼 느껴지기도 하고, 영화의 긴장감을 유지하는 데 효과적으로 작용한다. 수많은 영화들이 만들어지는 요즘 날것 그대로 자신이 하고자 하는 이야기를 해낸 흔치 않은 경우이다.
