A lonely, gigantic monster lives in a reservoir surrounded by mountains. One day a little boy comes to the reservoir and almost meet this monster but he is scared to reveal himself to this little boy because this boy would be scared of. As time goes by, many people with different kinds of their stories come and go but this monster still lives alone. At this moment, one man who knows the truth of this monster comes to this reservoir.

I decided to make a short film for myself when I have had doubts about my life. I worked out a way to use only single color by pencil line to produce this film, and headed toward the product one by one even without continuity. I'd like to express warm and humorous story about what a monster in the reservoir is going to live for?

<마리이야기>, <천년 여우 여우비> 등으로 알려진 이성강 감독은 원래 단편 애니메이션 작가로도 우리에게 친숙한 이름이었다. 그가 오랜만에 단편을 만들었다. <저수지의 괴물>은 어른과 아이가 함께 볼 수 있는 동화이다. 저수지에서 자신의 모습을 감추고 살아온 ‘괴물’은 인간과 조우하고 싶지만, 자신의 모습에 어린 아이들이 놀랄까 봐 모습을 드러내지 못한다. 인간은 미지의 대상에 대해 막연한 호기심과 공포감을 동시에 갖고 있다. 만나고 싶지만 두려운 어떤 존재. 이성강 감독은 어른과 아이의 시점뿐만 아니라 괴물의 시점도 영화에 포함시키면서 다층적인 구조의 영화를 만드는 데 성공한다. 어린 시절 공포와 호기심의 대상이었던 괴물은 어른들에겐 추억의 대상이 된다. 저수지의 외로운 괴물은 인간에게 친근하게 다가가고 싶어하지만 그 의도는 번번히 빗나간다. 이성강 감독은 편안하고 단출한 그림체와 괴물의 마음을 드러내는 내레이션을 통해 어른과 아이가 함께 볼 수 있지만, 전혀 다른 감성을 느낄 수 있는 따뜻한 동화를 만들어 냈다. 어쩌면 우리 안 깊숙이 있을지도 모를 귀여운 괴물의 존재에 대해 다시 한 번 생각하는 계기가 될 것이다. 그것은 미지의 존재에 대한 동경이며, 지나간 시절에 대한 향수이며 추억이다.
