SYNOPSIS

Koh Jong-woo goes to a market to buy an ice vest before summer comes. Buying an ice vest is an important thing since he has to wear a vest in hot summer. It is because he has got the breast surgery yet. He should hide his breasts by the vest. He dreams of more liberal future saving his money for the surgery. Han Mu-ji (a pseudonym) is so happy that she could have received the surgical removal of her breast which Han had desired for a long time. He opens his breast in the Queer Culture Festival along with other civil rights activists for transgendered people. He comes to ponder more about her identity as an FTM again, however, as much as he has freedom from the surgery now. He cannot realize the identity of FTM as his body is becoming more and more like a non-transgender male body. Kim Myung-jin changed his sex in order to live as who he is. But it is not like what he imagined before. He expected that his new social security number starting with number 1 will give him wider freedom for him. However, his records that state that he went to a girl’s middle school and high school makes troubles for him.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Collective for Sexually Minor Culture, Pinks has made a survey on the actual condition of civil rights of transgendered people along with human rights organizations and individual activists in 2006. While working on this research, I met the main characters of this documentary. They were born with biological women’s bodies, but FTM (Female To Male) transgender people who want to become men as the gender recognized by others and they recognize by themselves. While seeing them, it seemed that I could make a point of contact to understand life and desire of FTM transgender people through interpreting women’s experiences. And this naturally led me to produce a documentary. Iwish that non-transgender women and FTM transgender could share the issue of a variety of discrimination and oppression from gender dichotomy, and think about how to solve the problems together, in order to ponder the direction of transgender civil rights movements.
